I hope all of you are managing to keep warm!
Things occur sometimes to cancel events.
I do my best to keep you updated about closings and changes. If you hear of an event being closed, please email me.
I will do what I can to get the information out to everyone. If there is any question in your mind about an event, please
contact the organizer or the club directly.
I also like to hear about new events, so please send those to me too.
Thanks to those who have sent updates to me on schedule changes, etc. I most appreciate receiving
your information by Sunday evening or early Monday, whenever possible. That way they can be included in the newsletter when
I write it, rather than coming out as an update.
Welcome to the new readers. The distribution list continues
to grow. Thank you for all the information you send to me. Thank you also to the others from whose newsletters
I freely borrow information about many of the events listed here.
For those of you interested in dance cruises
or other dance vacations, some are listed near the end of this newsletter.
Does anyone have anything to report
VA bars & restaurants are supposed to be non-smoking now. There are some exceptions and some 'variations
in interpretation' of the new law. Just warning you.......
1. Fredericksburg area residents (and others
too) check out fburgcountrydance.com for info on some weekly and special events This is a new web page from a group
that recently organized. You might also check http://www.wfls.com/HotCountryNightsPage for info on an every Saturday
event hosted by the radio station.
2. Re-opening of country dancing on Thursdays at The Corral at Fast Eddie's
in Centreville, VA (in the new Corral upstairs) is delayed yet another week. The night features dance lessons with Danielle
at 7:30pm and The Southern Winds Band and DJ Mini Me from 8:30 to 11pm. Thanks from the band to those of you who came out
in November & December to show support. The support has to continue to keep it going.
3. 'Country
by the Bay' on January 16 was GREAT! Those of you who missed it, missed a great time. We had the S. MDers as well
as a number of people from VA and other locations. Bring your Valentine (or not) & come out & join us at the next
dance on Saturday, February 13. Dancers, it's definitely worth the drive. The Southern Winds Band will play from
8pm - midnight. I'll be teaching a line dance at 7 (?) and a couples' dance at 7:30 (?). Come out & join
the party! The cover includes dance lessons, draft beer, soda, & snacks, as well as the dance. The floor is
HUGE (the absolute biggest in the area) & hardwood, and easy on the feet and legs. I am taking ALL of the table
reservations by email. The whole schedule for 2010 is below in 'Looking Ahead
4. Nick's lessons
continue on Tuesdays (line and couples'), Fridays (line and couples') and Saturdays (line). Come out & learn
some new dance moves! On Tuesdays, Line dance lessons and cover are FREE in January. Nick's is offering a Valentine's
Weekend Dinner package for couples. Richie Fields will be the band that weekend. There's also a big Mardi Gras party
planned on Feb. 16 with DARK WHISKEY, featuring a Cajun & Creole all you can eat $10 buffet. The St. Patty's party
will be on Tuesday, March 16 with PLOWBOY. Country Open Mic Night is the 1st Wednesday of the month. Check the
listings below in 'Looking Ahead' for more info or check www.nicksnightclub.com
5. The S. MD dances at
the Hotel Charles on Fridays are continuing. The February dances are 2/5 & 2/19. The Hotel Charles is located
in Hughesville, MD.
6. Club Baltimore (formerly Little Texas) is continuing the Friday dances. Chuck &
Diana are DJing on Fridays from 8pm to closing. The hope is they can continue to get back to having a good number of country
dancers to be able to keep the country going. Cover is $5 with no lessons until the crowd builds up. Email Diana

7. The next NVCWDA dance will be Saturday, February 6, at Luther
Jackson M.S. in Falls Church, VA. NVCWDA dances feature DJ music and, usually, two lessons: a line dance at 7:30
and a couples' lesson at 8:00. The atmosphere is friendly with no smoking and no alcohol. Snack food is provided
(sometimes more than snacks). The dances are held on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturdays. Check www.nvcwda.org for
more information on the organization and the activities. NOTE: If schools cancel activities for weather, this
dance is affected. The NVCWDA website has that announcement.
8. There are dance lessons through the Parks &
Recreation agencies in several counties. There are line dance & couples' classes in Calvert County (MD) at Mt. Hope
Community Center on Thursdays with Terrie Pirkey. Check the website: http://www.co.cal.md.us/residents/parks/arts/ for
information and registration.
9. There are several locations for dance lessons sponsored by Fairfax Co. Parks.
They are generally held in sessions of several weeks in length, so there is a start date and an end date. Pre-registration
through the county system is required and the time varies from center to center on how long before a class begins the registration
has to be done. Information and registration can be located at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/parktakes.htm I've included
as many as I know about in the listings below.
10. The Country Steppers Dance Team is still seeking more dancers
to join the team. The team is the official show team for the Northern Virginia Country Western Dance Association (NVCWDA).
For information, go to the association's web site at: www.nvcwda.org then click on dance team. The purpose of the
team is to show the public what country western dancing is all about. So, if you've got some extra time & want
to do more dancing, give them a try.
11. If you need directions to any of the places listed, check the listing
of the event or check the web address or email in each item. If all that fails, let me know. I do have directions
to some of the locations & know how to find some of the others.
