Dance News 7/20/10 to 8/3/10
Hi to All,
This is a multi-week edition. Please note changes within the weekly listings.....'Looking
Ahead' begins after 8/2. There will be no updates. Also, since there have been problems with sending this
to the webmaster and sending the updates, I can't say for sure when I'll resume the email version.
Thanks
to those who have sent updates to me on schedule changes, etc. I most appreciate receiving your information by
Sunday evening or early Monday, whenever possible. That way they can be included in the newsletter when I write it, rather
than coming out as an update.
I also like to hear about new events, so please send those to me too.
Welcome to the new readers. The distribution list continues to grow. Thank you for all the information you send
to me. Thank you also to the others from whose newsletters I freely borrow information about many of the events listed
here.
For those of you interested in dance cruises or other dance vacations, some are listed near the end of this
newsletter.
Does anyone have anything to report?
1. Manassas area dancers, the restaurant 90
Degrees (Grados) is hosting a country dance night (on Wednesdays only) with $2 cover (except band nights $5) and free lessons.
They are planning to have a band once a month. Next band is 7/21. See the entry below for more info.
2. Frederick, MD area dancers! Check out the old Lucas McCain's on Fridays. It is now Mack's Rock Bar
and is having DJ music for country dancers on Friday nights. From one report I got, there are dancers from years ago
coming out. So, Frederick, support this venue to keep some dancing in Frederick. WFRE is involved with it, so
you might check that website for info.
3. Thursday dancing at The Corral at Fast Eddie's is in full swing.
Southern Winds is playing every week, with DJ Minime on the breaks.There are lessons by Cheri Litzenburg. The new dance
floor upstairs is very large and easy on the feet & legs. There has been a good crowd lately, but the crowd needs
continue growing on a consistent basis to keep it going. Wait staff has been added to improve service. There is a $5 cover
for the country dance crowd.
4. Nick's is THE place to learn to dance on Tuesdays (line and couples'),
Fridays (line and couples') and Saturdays (line). Come out & learn some new dance moves! Cover is FREE
on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays, unless there is a band. On Tuesdays, Line dance lessons are FREE. Tuesday
Couples' Lessons for July will be Couples' Specialy Dances & Cha Cha and continue to be $5pp (A REAL BARGAIN).
Friday Couples' Lessons are almost always 2 Step. There is live country music every Friday & Saturday.
Come early and have dinner. The deck is open for a relaxing spot for dinner or a few drinks. There is swing dancing
on Wednesdays with lessons and, occasionally, a swing band (next band, 7/21). Check the listings below or check www.nicksnightclub.com
for more info.
5. The S. MD dances at the Hotel Charles, in Hughesville, MD, on Fridays are continuing. This
is not an every week event. Check the schedule below.
6. The PSDC Summer Schedule is for a dance
once a month on the 3rd Friday.
7. The next NVCWDA dance will be Saturday, July 31 at the new (cooler with
a wood floor) location in Burke, VA. NVCWDA dances feature DJ music and, usually, two lessons: a line dance
at 7:30 and a couples' lesson at 8:00. The atmosphere is friendly with no smoking and no alcohol. Snack food
is provided (sometimes more than snacks). The dances are held on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturdays. Check www.nvcwda.org
for more information on the organization and the activities. NOTE: If schools cancel activities for weather, this
dance is canceled. The NVCWDA website has that announcement.
8. 'Country by the Bay' on May 8 was
really fun! Those of you who missed it, missed a great time. We had lots of familiar faces and many new friends too.
Bring friends (or come alone) & join us at the next dance. Unfortunately there are a few months until then. The
next dance is September 11 with the JR Booker Band. Dancers, it's definitely worth the drive. The band will play
from 8pm - midnight. I'll be teaching a line dance at 7 (tba) and a couples' dance at 7:30 (tba). Come out &
join the party! The $15 cover includes dance lessons, draft beer, soda, & snacks, as well as the dance. The
floor is HUGE (the biggest in the area) & hardwood, and easy on the feet and legs. I am taking ALL of the table
reservations by email. The schedule for the Fall of 2010 is below in 'Looking Ahead
9. Fredericksburg
area residents (and others too) check out fburgcountrydance.com for info on some weekly and special events. The Saturdays
at Liberty Center is still being advertised on WFLS.
10. The Ocean City Halloween Dance Weekend & Light
the Night Walk is October 22-24, 2010. It will be here before you know it. The Grand Hotel is taking reservations
for the event. Sandy is hoping that you will reserve early since there is another group who would like the space.
Details are in 'Looking Ahead' below.
11. Dance lessons are offered through the Parks & Recreation
agencies in several counties. Most are series that run for several weeks and require pre-registration. Check the Parks
& Recreation information for your county online or in publications. A. Calvert Co.(MD) at Mt. Hope Com. Ctr. on Thursdays

12. The Country Steppers Dance Team is still seeking more dancers to join the team. The team is the official
show team for the Northern Virginia Country Western Dance Association (NVCWDA). For information, go to the association's
web site at: www.nvcwda.org then click on dance team. The purpose of the team is to show the public what country western
dancing is all about. So, if you've got some extra time & want to do more dancing, give them a try.
