It's TIME to DANCE

Maryland and DC dance info

linda.jpg

Hi Fellow Country Dancers!

I've been dancing in the DC/Baltimore/So. MD area since late 1992. Until they changed format in 2002, I danced most of the time at Spurs in Waldorf. I taught 2 Step & West Coast Swing there the last couple of years. I also danced at Cherry Hill on Wednesdays, Blackie's, and a few other places occasionally. Now, I'm at Nick's more often than anywhere else and am teaching couples dances there with Lloyd Thompson. You can still find me at Cherry Hill most Wednesdays, as well as occasionally at other locations.

My newsletter began as a way for the former patrons of Spurs to stay together & know where to find each other. Over the last few years, the recipient list has grown to hundreds of people and continues to grow. My focus is country dancing, but I also put in some swing & hustle events, especially those that might also play a few 2 Steps. I owe some of those organizers for the lessons I learned from them as I came along as a dancer as well as the much of the information I use in the newsletter.

If you'd like me to add your name to my list, please send your name & email address to lbloyer@yahoo.com. Please include something about dance news in the subject line. Also, if you know of an event I should include, please let me know.

I hope you find this new way of presenting the information interesting & helpful.

Linda

It is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you of the passing of a good friend of mine and one of our local dancers.  Ed Golden passed away on Saturday, losing his valiant battle with cancer.  Over the years, Ed danced at many locations: The Golden Bull, The Junction, Nick's, Cherry Hill, Cancun Cantina, and others.  Recently, he married Jan Fergus, another local dancer.  Please keep Jan, his four sons, and the rest of their family in your thoughts and prayers.  There are many who will miss him a great deal.

Hi to All,

I will be taking a break, so this newsletter covers a 2-week period.  The first half lists the events as usual.  The second reflects changes only, as I know them now.  There will likely be more cancellations for the holiday weekend than I know about as I type this.  Please check the individual websites or phone if you plan to go to a club or event.   I will be unable to do any updates.

Things occur sometimes to cancel events.  I do my best to keep you updated about closings and changes.  If you hear of an event being closed, please email me.  I will do what I can to get the information out to everyone.  If there is any question in your mind about an event, please contact the organizer or the club directly.

I also like to hear about new events, so please send those to me too.
Thanks to those who have sent updates to me on schedule changes, etc.   I most appreciate receiving your information by Sunday evening or early Monday, whenever possible. That way they can be included in the newsletter when I write it, rather than coming out as an update.

Welcome to the new readers.  The distribution list continues to grow.  Thank you for all the information you send to me.  Thank you also to the others from whose newsletters I freely borrow information about many of the events listed here.

For those of you interested in dance cruises or other dance vacations, some are listed near the end of this newsletter.

Does anyone have anything to report?

1. Good news for non-smokers!  As of Tuesday, June 2, Nick's went non-smoking in the main dining/dancing room.  Smoking is allowed at the front bar and in the back room.  Also, for the month of June, Tuesday Line dance lessons are FREE.  Couple's lessons still cost $5.

2. Check out the country dancing at The Greene Turtle in Prince Frederick, MD.  There has been a nice group there.  This is the first dancing at a club/restaurant in Southern MD for a while, so if you want it to continue, you need to come & support it.  There are lessons with Becky Phillips Heuman and she plays dance music afterwards: a mix of line and couples' dances.  There is no cover. Check http://www.greeneturtle.com/menu.php for the menu.

3. Dancing at Little Texas on Friday nights is cancelled, at least for June..  The Sunday & Monday dances are still being held.

4. Cowboyz in Ocean City is open for the summer.  Sandy Garrish is teaching lessons on Thursdays.  There are bands on Fridays & Saturdays.

5. There is more info on the VA Line Dance Festival in Richmond under Looking Ahead.  The VLDF is July 31-Aug.2.  Early Bird Reg. ends with the end of June.  There's a bigger venue this year and a new DJ, as well as lots of workshops and dancing all weekend.

6. 'Country by the Bay' had a nice, if not huge, crowd on 5/16.  This was the last of the season.  The next dance will be Saturday, September 19 for the next country dance at American Legion Post 206, in Chesapeake Beach, MD.  The band will be Southern Winds.  They play from 8pm - midnight. I'll be teaching a line dance at 7 and a couples' dance at 7:30.  Come out & join the party!  The cover includes dance lessons, draft beer, soda, & snacks, as well as the dance.  The floor is huge & hardwood.  I generally have a block of tables reserved.  There has been some talk of attempting to do something over the summer.  If I receive any info about that, I'll pass it along.

7.  The next NVCWDA dance will be Saturday, July 18, at Luther Jackson M.S. in Falls Church, VA.  NVCWDA dances feature DJ music and, usually, two lessons (a line dance and a couples' lesson).  The atmosphere is friendly with no smoking and no alcohol.  Snack food is provided (sometimes more than snacks).  The dances are held on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturdays.  Check www.nvcwda.org for more information on the organization and the activities.

8. The Corral at Fast Eddie's in Centreville, VA (on Rte. 29, near Rte. 28) is the newest location for country dancing.  On Thursdays there are dance lessons at 7:30pm, and The Southern Winds Band plays from 8:30 to 11pm.  there are country bands & line dance lessons on Saturdays too.  In July (except for the 4th) Southern Winds Band will be playing on both Thursdays and Saturdays.  'The Corral' is downstairs.

9. There are dance lessons through the Parks & Recreation agencies in several counties. There are line dance & couples' classes in Calvert County (MD) at Mt. Hope Community Center on Thursdays with Terrie Pirkey.  The session has ended.  The classes will resume in the Fall.  Check the website: http://www.co.cal.md.us/residents/parks/arts/ for information and registration.

10. There are several locations for dance lessons sponsored by Fairfax Co. Parks.  They are generally held in sessions of several weeks in length, so there is a start date and an end date.  Pre-registration through the county system is required and the time varies from center to center on how long before a class begins the registration has to be done.  Information and registration can be located at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/parktakes.htm I've included as many as I know about in the listings below.

11. The dates for the Ocean City Dance weekend and benefit for Leukemia & Lymphoma are set.  The hotel is taking reservations.  Check 'Looking Ahead' below for all of the details that are available now.

12. There is dancing on Sundays in VA most weeks each month.  Keep an eye on the listings below for locations and dates.

13. The Country Steppers Dance Team is still seeking more dancers to join the team.  The team is the official show team for the Northern Virginia Country Western Dance Association (NVCWDA).  For information, go to the association's web site at:  www.nvcwda.org then click on dance team. The purpose of the team is to show the public what country western dancing is all about.  So, if you've got some extra time & want to do more dancing, give them a try.

14.  If you need directions to any of the places listed, check the listing of the event or check the web address or email in each item.  If all that fails, let me know.  I do have directions to some of the locations & know how to find some of the others.
